Dorian Johnson, a 25-year-old mother, shares her story of raising her black son, Zavied, and his albino twin brother, Zakari, who have often been misunderstood due to the difference in their skin color. Dorian, who herself is albino, hopes to shed light on the discrimination her family encounters and promote awareness and acceptance.

Many people mistakenly assume that Zavied is adopted rather than her biological child due to his lighter complexion. Dorian’s frustration is evident when people question whether her sons are truly twins, despite the clear resemblance between them upon closer inspection. Zavied and Zakari were born on February 11, 2018. Shortly after their birth, doctors informed Dorian and her 28-year-old partner, Michael Steppney, that Zavied had the most common type of albinism, which affects the skin, hair, and eyes. Albinism, a condition that affects roughly 1 in 20,000 people worldwide, results in hypopigmentation and characteristic fair skin and white or golden hair.

Albinism is an inherited condition, with a one in four chance of occurrence if both parents carry the faulty gene. In the case of non-identical twins, only one child can inherit the gene and develop albinism.

Dorian, who works in a clothing retailer, shared her emotional reaction to Zavied’s diagnosis. She anticipates the need to teach her son to embrace his uniqueness and differences, foreseeing it as a challenge.
