Archaeological Sensation: “Gigantic Tombs Discovered in Crimea”

During archaeological excavations in Crimea, experts made a remarkable discovery – a necropolis belonging to the Byzantine Empire, containing the tomb of a giant.

While the ongoing reconstruction of the Mithridates Staircase in Kerch captures attention, simultaneous archaeological work in the area has revealed an extensive necropolis covering an area of up to 100 square meters. This burial ground contains the remains of individuals who once visited the temple of Juan Bautista.

The excavations have so far unearthed 27 burial sites, including some of children and twin burials, along with various artifacts like bronze pendants and bracelets. Among the discoveries was an astonishing find of felt clothing in one of the burials, providing valuable clues for dating purposes.

However, the most extraordinary discovery was yet to come. Archaeologists uncovered a funerary box measuring over 2.30 meters in length, containing what appeared to be the skeleton of a giant. Given that the average height of the local population during that era was only 1.60 meters, the presence of a man exceeding two meters in height is perplexing and contradicts existing data.

To gain more insight into the find, the remains underwent examination by the team’s anthropologist, who hopes to estimate the age of the individual buried there.

The excavation process has been slow and challenging due to the mixed and complicated terrain. In ancient times, debris was simply discarded on the ground, and over time, the necropolis was built on top of these ancient remains during the Middle Ages. Consequently, the precise origin and interpretation of the findings have become difficult for archaeologists.

Currently, experts are in negotiations with the Diocese of Kerch-Feodosia to secure permission to extract and further examine the discovered remains.

As investigations continue, experts strive to unravel the mystery behind the giant’s skeleton and the reason for its abnormal size. Alongside, they are diligently searching for explanations regarding the origins of the individual and shedding light on the remarkable history of this unique necropolis.
