These remarkable creations are the result of the skilled hands of sculptor and architect Patrick Dougherty, based in North Carolina, USA. He crafts these astonishing works of art from trees found in the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
Patrick’s works are exceptionally imaginative; they resemble bird nests, cocoons, and giant honeycombs constructed from young tree trunks. Instead of cutting, hewing, planing, or assembling, Patrick shapes his sculptures by intricately weaving hundreds of young tree trunks together, forming houses, giant animals, and various objects.
Mosaiculture is an art form that yields stunning tree-based sculptures. These plant-based artworks are built using steel or aluminum frames, with soil filling the interior to nurture the flowers and grass, keeping their colors fresh. A watering system is integrated into the compositions to ensure continuous growth and development.
What sets Patrick’s works apart is their ability to change with the seasons, adapting to the natural laws of nature, including shifts in colors and shapes that accompany each season of the year.
After graduating from the University of Management, Hospital, and Health, Patrick pursued studies in art and sculpture at the University of North Carolina. It was here that he began delving into ancient house-building techniques and, drawing on his carpentry skills and love for nature, began experimenting and creating his initial works.
Patrick’s very first creation was his own home, constructed from small branches, rocks, and wood chips. To this day, it remains the residence of Patrick, his wife, and their son.
Over the past three decades, Patrick has produced over 230 works of art that have been exhibited worldwide, earning praise from both professionals and audiences alike.
