Is Wentworth getting a reboot? | New Idea

Wentworth, the acclaimed Australian prison drama, captivated audiences when it premiered on Foxtel in 2013. With its gritty portrayal of life in a women’s prison, the series built a loyal fanbase over its 100-episode run. Though the show officially ended in 2021, its impact lingers, and recent comments from one of its cast members have sparked renewed excitement about a possible spin-off.

At Wentworth Con in Sydney in November, actress Katrina Milosevic, who played Sue “Boomer” Jenkins, hinted at a long-awaited spin-off.

“There is a potential spin-off in the works, did you know that?” she revealed, adding that the project had been “in development for years.” While she advised taking the news “with a grain of salt,” she also teased that if it materializes, fans could see Boomer with a baby.

Though details remain scarce, this revelation has reignited interest in Wentworth, proving that its legacy endures.

What Made Wentworth So Iconic?

The series was a modern reimagining of Prisoner, a hit Network Ten show from the late ’70s and ’80s. While it retained some character names and traits, Wentworth introduced fresh storylines and a contemporary feel.

The show followed Bea Smith, who entered Wentworth Prison after being accused of attempting to murder her husband. Over time, Bea’s journey reflected the prison’s shifting power dynamics, keeping viewers on edge.

With gripping storytelling and powerhouse performances, Wentworth earned numerous accolades, including 27 Logie Award nominations, 21 AACTA nominations, and 7 Screen Producers Australia (SPA) nominations. It was also one of Foxtel’s longest-running dramas.

Despite persistent rumors, there are currently no plans for a new season. However, spin-off discussions, particularly featuring Boomer, continue to keep fans hopeful. Pamela Rabe, known for her role as the formidable Joan “The Freak” Ferguson, has also expressed interest in revisiting the Wentworth universe.

In 2020, as production wrapped on the final season, producer Jo Porter hinted at future possibilities. She told the Herald Sun: “Never say never… There’s a few characters who survive, there are possibilities.”

Why Did Wentworth End?

A combination of creative and practical factors led to Wentworth’s conclusion. According to Jo Porter, the Victorian government had plans for the filming location used in five of the eight seasons. The creative team also wanted to end the show on their own terms, rather than overextending its storylines.

“We are going out on a high,” Porter explained. “That also means if down the track we come up with a brilliant reason to examine a character or a different part of the world, there’s the chance to potentially come back.”

Additionally, Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh stated that the network wanted to focus on new creative ventures.
