Kayaker Films Terrifying Encounter as Humpback Whale Nearly Swallows Them
In a heart-stopping incident, two women kayaking off the coast of Avila Beach, California, had a close encounter with a humpback whale that nearly swallowed them whole. Julie McSorley and Liz Cottriel were enjoying a leisurely afternoon of whale watching on Monday when the extraordinary event unfolded.
As the two friends sat in their kayaks, observing the majestic whales beneath the water’s surface, they suddenly found themselves in a life-threatening situation. Footage captured by McSorley on her cellphone shows the moment a massive humpback whale breached the surface and crashed down onto their kayak, sending them airborne.
The women’s screams are barely audible as they are flung into the water. McSorley managed to record the terrifying incident as they were launched into the air. The footage also reveals small fish swirling around the pair, suggesting that the whale may have been attempting to catch a meal.
Fortunately, the whale spat them out, and McSorley and Cottriel emerged from the water shaken but unharmed. The incident left onlookers in shock, fearing the worst for the kayakers. Concerned paddleboarders and kayakers swiftly came to their aid, ensuring their safety.
In an interview with Fox 26 News, Cottriel shared her thoughts during the intense ordeal. She recalled thinking, “I’m gonna push. Like, I’m gonna push a whale out of the way! It was the weirdest thought. I’m thinking, ‘I’m dead. I’m dead.’ I thought it was gonna land on me.” Fortunately, both women managed to escape the whale’s jaws and resurfaced moments later.
The dramatic incident was captured from various angles by fellow whale watchers, highlighting the sheer astonishment of the onlookers. The video footage portrays the immense size and power of the humpback whale as it momentarily engulfed the kayak and its occupants.
After the incident, McSorley and Cottriel were able to retrieve their kayak and safely return to shore. Despite the terrifying encounter, the only casualty was Julie’s car keys, which were lost in the commotion. The women expressed their fascination and awe for these magnificent creatures but admitted that they never expected such an up-close and personal encounter.
