Rare ‘Seven Suns’ Phenomenon Appears in Chengdu Sky
An eye-popping video of seven suns, filmed from a hospital in China, has captivated and baffled viewers worldwide. The video, taken by a woman recording the sunset, shows what appears to be multiple suns in the sky. However, the minute-long clip, which initially seemed like a cosmic miracle, was actually an optical illusion caused by light refracting through the layered glass of the window from which it was filmed.
The video, captured on August 18 from the 11th floor of a hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan, displayed the sun duplicated with varying levels of intensity. Wang, the woman who recorded the video, reported that viewers were mesmerized by the surreal display. The phenomenon sparked numerous theories on social media, with one person on Weibo attributing it to a “magnetic field glitch” causing parallel universes to manifest visibly. Others suggested it was a sign of “immense pollution” in China, or even linked it to global warming revelations.
Despite the outlandish theories, one commenter correctly identified the cause of the seven suns: reflection and refraction in the multi-pane window. Light from the sun bounced between the layers of glass, creating distinct visual separations and multiple images. The brightest sun in the center was the real one, while the others were merely reflections.
While the scientific explanation clarified the mystery, some viewers preferred to connect the spectacle to Chinese mythology. According to legend, Hou Yi, the god of archery, was sent from the Heavens to save humans by stopping 10 suns from burning the earth. He shot down nine of the suns, leaving only one to separate day from night.
The video, blending modern optical science and ancient mythology, continues to fascinate viewers, reminding us of the awe-inspiring and sometimes deceptive nature of our natural world.
