The Nun 3: Everything We Know So Far

In The Nun 2, Valak took control of Maurice, a character seen in multiple Conjuring films, including The Nun. By the movie’s end, Sister Irene successfully saved Maurice and sent Valak back to hell. Maurice seems to have recovered, but a quick glance from Sister Irene reveals she isn’t entirely convinced Valak is gone for good. Given that The Nun connects to the Warrens’ story in The Conjuring timeline, Sister Irene’s concerns are justified, suggesting a strong narrative drive for continuing the franchise with The Nun 3.

The Nun 3 News

As of now, there hasn’t been any official news about The Nun 3, and it hasn’t been mentioned in James Wan’s plans for future movies in The Conjuring universe. However, The Nun 2 Director Michael Chaves shared in an interview with SFX Magazine in August 2023 (via GamesRadar) that he sees potential to expand the story further with The Nun 3. He remarked, “There’s a line in [The Nun 2]: ‘Demons are infinite.’ I like the idea that she’s always been here in different forms. I think that there’s still more stories of Valak the demon nun to be told.”

When discussing potential stories for The Nun 3 and how they would integrate into The Conjuring universe, Michael Chaves pointed out, “Anyone who saw the first Conjuring knows that Maurice is possessed and then exorcised by the Warrens, and we know that that happens in the late ’60s in the Conjuring timeline.” He continued, “[The Nun 2] is set in the ’50s so we’re still a ways off from that. The events that unfold in between begin to flesh out that narrative further.”

The Cast

Until it’s officially confirmed, predicting the cast of The Nun 3 accurately is challenging. The Conjuring spinoff series centers on Valak, a demon who can appear throughout history, making Bonnie Aarons as Valak (in the form of the Nun) the only certain cast member, a role she has consistently portrayed since the first Conjuring film.

While there’s a possibility The Nun 3 might introduce a completely new set of human characters, as seen in many horror sequels in other franchises, if it continues directly from The Nun 2’s ending, several cast members are likely to return:

• Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene
• Jonas Bloquet as Maurice/Frenchie
• Storm Reid as Sister Debra

If The Nun 3 concludes the trilogy by depicting Valak’s final exorcism from Frenchie, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will likely reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Additionally, new characters are expected to join the cast if the third installment of The Nun series is confirmed.

What Would Happen in The Nun 3?

There hasn’t been any confirmation on the storyline for The Nun 3 yet. The post-credits scene of The Nun 2 featuring Ed and Lorraine Warren is widely believed to be setting up The Conjuring 4 (titled The Conjuring: Last Rites) rather than The Nun 3.

Director Michael Chaves has hinted that there are still several years in the Conjuring timeline where the stories of the Nun and Frenchie remain untold. The Nun 3 could explore Valak’s return to Maurice once more, concluding before his encounter with the Warrens. Alternatively, the third installment might fully integrate the Warrens into the spinoff series, depicting their initial encounter with Valak and the Nun.

The Nun 3 Release Date Prediction

Even if they announce The Nun 3 soon, it will probably take a while. The first movie, The Nun, came out in 2018. Then, The Nun 2 didn’t come out until 2023, five years later. They haven’t confirmed The Nun 3 yet, but if they do, it might come out in 2026 at the earliest. Even that might be too hopeful.

Until then, audiences can look forward to The Conjuring: Last Rites and the continued expansion of the Conjurverse.
